Readers and Writers
Motivates children towards successful reading and writing from Kindergarten to Primary 2
At preschool and early primary levels, Readers and Writers is based on
an outstanding imported reading scheme that takes young children
confidently through the initial stages of literacy in the classroom,
and also at home. Children take home beautifully-crafted fiction and
non-fiction books to keep, as the foundation of a personal library to
treasure.
After Primary
1, children are encouraged towards literature of different genres. This
extends reading and develops writing for different purposes,
complementing success in school work.
Aims
- To provide a structured approach to building literacy skills using a quality graded reading scheme with class activities
-
To allow children to develop individually in small classes in which
they will read with their peers and individually with the teacher
- Development of phonic skills, sight words, vocabulary and use of picture cues
- Mastery of language structure and grammar to support developing literacy skills
- Provision of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction for class and home reading
- Development of lateral and inferential thinking to support comprehension
- To extend children's reading and writing towards developing their own style of creative writing
Objectives
-
K1 and K2: Word attack skills for reading and writing: Sight and high
frequency words, language structure and awareness, phonics, vocabulary
building, picture cueing, hand-writing and beginning spelling.
- P1 and P2: Comprehension of fiction and non-fiction, sentence structure, punctuation, creative writing and composition.
Children work in groups of 12 to one teacher. Kindergarten 1 and 2
classes are supported by an additional Assistant Teacher
Classes are weekly (except on public holidays), 1.5 hours per session.
Children are grouped according to age and school level. However, more
than one reading level will emerge in each class as children develop at
their own pace.
BookRoom Service
Children make use of the BookRoom by borrowing a book every week from
our extensive library of literature for each level of learning.
Building a reading home
Children from Kindergarden 1 to Primary 1 levels receive books each
term from the reading series to keep. These are read and extended in
class with the teacher over a period of weeks, after which children
take them home to enjoy with the family. Parents' acknowledgement of
their child's reading success is an important element of the programme,
building confidence and powerful motivation for further development of
skills.
Reports and communication
Parents are an important part of their children's language and literacy
development. Our teachers are guides for both children and parents so
we welcome parents to be part of the learning, by communicating
regularly with their teachers, visiting class at the beginning and end
of term, and reading with their child each week. Parents receive a
written report of their child's progress at the end of each term.
