Sharon Sharon Roshini Jacob • Speech Communication Arts Primary Teaching Certificate, Guildhall School of Music & Drama London in 2004 • Julia Gabriel Teaching Certificate (Speech & Drama) in 2001 • Diploma in Montessori from London Montessori Centre in 1999

Experience Summary: From 1994 – 1999 I worked and trained in Montessori kindergartens in Kuala Lumpur before coming to Julia Gabriel Centre in 2000. Since then I have worked full-time at JGC, conducted workshops in the community and pioneered Julia Gabriel Centre’s Drama Parties in 2004. In 2004, I conducted a drama workshop at Club Med, Bintan, for children aged 2 – 8 years old.

In 2006, I was involved in drama workshops conducted at libraries in Singapore. I have been a part of performances for road shows and promotional activities for Julia Gabriel Centre. In 2007, I started to work with adults in Kuala Lumpur. I lectured and trained the first batch of teachers at our centre for the Julia Gabriel Speech and Drama Certificate and I continue to do so.

Teacher Elizabeth Lee Elizabeth Lee • Bachelor of Law (LLB)(Hons), University of Nottingham, UK, 2002 • Barrister-at-Law, Bar Vocational Course, BPP School of Law, London, UK, 2003 • Certificate in Speech and Drama Teaching, Julia Gabriel School of Education, 2007 • Professional Diploma in Early Childhood Education, University of Malaya, 2008

Experience Summary: I was trained as a lawyer and practised as an advocate and solicitor at Messrs. Shook Lin & Bok, KL for over 2 years. However, I soon realised that my passion lay in working with children, as can be seen through my involvement in teaching Sunday school at church, providing free tuition to abandoned children during my summer break and organising programmes for children while serving in the KL Bar Committee. As a result, I took a leap of faith by quitting the legal profession and joining Julia Gabriel Centre as a programme coordinator.

A year thereafter, I was absorbed into the teaching team. To better equip myself as an educator, I pursued a course in Early Childhood Education at University of Malaya. I have since taught in EduPlay and EduDrama programmes and as a Chiltern House music teacher. I love interacting with children and find it exciting yet humbling to be able to play a part in their journey to become confident and successful individuals.

My experiences here at Julia Gabriel Centre have been truly enriching and fulfilling and there will be no turning back for me!

Teacher-in-training Shobana Chandran Shobana Chandran • Bachelor of Communications (Hons), University of Science, Malaysia (USM, Penang), majored in Persuasive Communication, minored in Management.

Experience Summary: I never thought I would end up in the teaching line! It was one of my mother’s wishes, being a teacher herself. Through her life, I’ve seen how a teacher can influence a student’s life, being my life or the lives of her students. Well, now her dream has come true!

I was working in the Public Relations and Event Management sector for nearly 3 ½ years, when I decided to switch careers and move into teaching! I’ve always loved working with children, ever since I joined the teaching teams at Sundays Schools and VBS (Vacation Bible Schools). More than working with them, just being around children gives me joy!

And now, ever since joining Julia Gabriel Centre as a Programme Coordinator in 2007, I’ve had the privilege of working with children everyday. Nearly a year later, I’ve been given the opportunity to be part of the EduPlay and EduDrama team.

I hope to be the right role model for children that come here, as I realize teachers play an important role in moulding and shaping children’s behaviour. Seeing children grasp what is being taught and seeing them excel class after class, truly inspires me to do my best at work every day.
